Historic Beauty Meets Modern Elegance

If you want to see my inner geek go into overdrive, give me a combination of great design, historic preservation, interesting art & cozy ambiance all in one spot. That is The Georges, a boutique inn located in Lexington VA where I went last week with my daughter on a college visit (why not make it pleasant, right?!). Set in the Shenandoah Valley area, Lexington is home to great antique shops and farm to table restaurants in the downtown, ringed by the beautiful historic campus of Washington & Lee University as well as VMI.

The hotel actually owns two buildings across the street from each other, The Marshall Building where we stayed (dates back to 1809), and the Georgian-style Washington building which houses their larger restaurant, Haywood’s. Both buildings have a long & storied background that could fill a novel or two, but the main thing I love is how beautifully the architects and designers reimagined the space for busy, modern day use. The Georges went through a refresh in 2014 and has wonderful balance between historic presence and updated, warm and whimsical touches.

Our room (Room #14, with spotted headboard) was divine! Rustic & refined all at once. Huge soaking tub in the bathroom. Beautiful simple deck terrace outside. And looking at the hotel’s website, it seems that all the rooms are pretty great too...

It was really cold when we were there last weekend but The Washington building’s Haywood’s restaurant hosts lovely outdoor events when the weather is right. I’d love to go back & check that out. Thanks to my friend Margaret for pointing me in the right direction on this trip!
